I got my haircut at the Embassy!
Did you know there is a hair salon in the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo? Perhaps it is common to embassies all over the world but it was news to me. I had the unique opportunity of getting my haircut there last week! I was there to help with a series of videos the Embassy has been producing to promote study abroad. The next video, the one we filmed on Tuesday, is a continuation from the last one. You can watch the last one below: (My part comes around 1:00 into the video.) You’ll see right away that my hair was really short. Since I missed my regular haircut the week before, my hair was getting long. Well, long in terms of a short hair cut! Anyway, to make sure the videos flowed well, the director treated me to a haircut and make-up at the Embassy. It was fun! I had great time talking with the stylist and getting to know Chika Sawada, the Japanese actor from Aomori who plays Noriko in the videos. She is great!
Should I keep it short?
So, what do you think? Should I keep it short? Some of my family and friends say the super short cut makes me look more feminine. Others say I should grow it longer. What do you think? I’d love to hear what you think in the comments below – keep it short or grow it longer?

Hi! I’m Marci. I’ve lived in Japan for over 30 years, blending tech, language, and healing in my work. Through caregiving for my father-in-law with Alzheimer’s and supporting my husband’s cancer recovery, I discovered the importance of yoyu—having the time, energy, and emotional reserves to thrive. Now, I share these insights through writing, coaching, and creative projects. My upcoming memoir, Otosan, tells the story of those five transformative years. Let’s connect and create more yoyu in our lives!
