Be kind to your spaces

Be kind to your spaces. | A message brought to you with love, light and blessings from Marci Kobayashi at marcikobayashi.com

Over the last few years, I’ve struggled with finding the space in my life for the work I want to do. Sometimes this struggle has been about time, sometimes it has been about the actual physical space. Recently I have both time and a comfortable place to do my work and I am grateful.

Because I am fortunate to have what I need most of the time, I was surprised and then intrigued when the topic of spaces came up in a dialogue with my guides this week. Here is part of their message to me:

“Look around you when you begin your work. Yes, see the physical disturbances but also look for what is working. Pull them out and focus on them. Listen for the sounds that work and pull them out. Feel for what is working and pull it out. See your room through a different lens. See what is working. The things that don’t work will become less clear, and it will be easier to move them out and on their way.

Be kind to your spaces. You have much to give the world and one way is through the spaces you create and maintain. Be kind to them this week and see where you can grow your energy and expand your space.”

This is a new way of looking at spaces for me. I’m accustomed to seeing what is not working. I see the pile of paperwork on my desk to be filed or the gadget I’m not sure where to store. I fixate on these and feel overwhelmed with the clutter. Rather than clean it up, I grab my laptop and leave for a coffee shop – a space that is free and clear.

This morning I entered my workspace and looked for what is working. I found my beautiful green plants, the mini-altar on my file cabinet, a print from a dear friend on the wall, my cup of favorite pens and pencils, and my stack of oracle cards. It felt good. I turned on some music and within a few minutes, my pile of paperwork was nearly gone.

By focusing on what is working for me, I effortlessly cleared out that which isn’t. I love this space all the more.

Hi! I’m Marci. I’ve lived in Japan for over 30 years, blending tech, language, and healing in my work. Through caregiving for my father-in-law with Alzheimer’s and supporting my husband’s cancer recovery, I discovered the importance of yoyu—having the time, energy, and emotional reserves to thrive. Now, I share these insights through writing, coaching, and creative projects. My upcoming memoir, Otosan, tells the story of those five transformative years. Let’s connect and create more yoyu in our lives!
