5 reasons why you shouldn’t hire me to do your website

One of the best parts about being a web designer is working with people from all different backgrounds, including professors, doctors, artists, coaches, and authors. I love the variety, BUT not everyone is suited to working with me. And, that’s OK!

Finding the right person for your new website is important because the project means a significant investment in terms of your time and money. Therefore, I want to help you make sure you have found the right person before hiring me.

Here are 5 reasons why you shouldn’t hire me

1. You can’t afford it

If you are on a tight budget, then you probably don’t want to work with me. I am certainly not the most expensive web designer. I’m also not the cheapest. My custom website projects usually start at $5000. If you’re an author looking for a less expensive website, you can join the waitlist for my Soulful Author Websites

2. You only want to work via email.

When we first get started, we’ll have one or two emails back and forth. After that, we’ll say goodbye to email. I’ll manage all of our tasks in Asana. (Yep, there are some things you will need to do, too. See #3.) Asana is a free project management tool and the best way to get in touch with me about your website. I’m happy to walk you through how to use it. I bet you will end up loving the smartphone app as much as I do.

3. You want to scratch “website” off your to-do list.

If you are thinking, “Oh good, I can remove ‘website’ from my to-do list and leave everything up to Marci,” then we’re going to have trouble working together. I’m not your virtual assistant. You can hire me for that kind of support after we build your website. However, while we’re designing and building your website, you will have to be involved. Otherwise, you won’t be satisfied with the results.

Some tasks require thought and might take time, such as the initial intake form. On the other hand, some of the tasks are fun and can be checked off in about 15 minutes, like the Branding with Archetypes Assessment. And some of the tasks take a careful eye, like when we are both doing the final check before your site goes live. Of course, I will be doing the bulk of the work. Even so, you should expect to spend an hour or two each week giving me feedback.

4. You need a timekeeper.

If you come to me with a tight deadline and we agree to work together, then I will do everything in my power to make sure your website goes live by the agreed-upon date. However, I am super accommodating. For example, if you don’t have your content written yet, I won’t make you feel guilty. I’m more than happy to push back your deadline. I can guarantee that I will be understanding and supportive of whatever is happening in your life. What that means is that if you’re looking for someone to hold you accountable, then I’m not the right person. That said, I love breaking things down into bite-size chunks so that you can make progress.

5. You expect this to be a “pay once and you’re done” kind of project.

After your website goes live, you’ll need a plan to maintain it. Unfortunately, website maintenance is not an option. Either you have to learn how to do maintenance or hire someone to do it for you. I have another post all about why you need website maintenance. I’ve also made maintenance easy for my clients who don’t want to do it themselves by offering a Website Care Plan which includes hosting. Once your website goes live, you will be enrolled in this monthly service.

Do any of the above reasons have you running? Or, do you still think we would be a good fit? If so, tell me more about your website, and let’s talk!
